I baked this chicken and pumpkin layer cake for my dog Luna’s third birthday. The pumpkin made the layers moist, and she licked the frosting spoon before I could frost the cake.
Homemade Chicken & Pumpkin Dog Cake Recipe
This dog-friendly cake features tender, shredded chicken and nutritious pumpkin layered between moist cake, creating a tasty treat that is safe and beneficial for dogs. The recipe takes about 60 minutes from preparation to serving and can celebrate birthdays or any special moment in your pet’s life.
Ingredients
- 2 cups whole wheat flour
- 1 cup canned pumpkin (not pumpkin pie filling)
- 1 cup cooked chicken, shredded
- 2 large eggs
- 1/2 cup unsweetened apple sauce
- 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
- 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
- 1/4 cup low-sodium chicken broth
Instructions
- Preheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 8-inch round cake pans.
- Mix Ingredients: In a large bowl, combine whole wheat flour, baking soda, and baking powder. In another bowl, mix together pumpkin, shredded chicken, eggs, and apple sauce until well combined.
- Combine Mixtures: Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, mixing until fully incorporated. If the mixture seems too thick, add chicken broth until desired consistency is achieved.
- Pour and Bake: Divide the batter evenly between the prepared cake pans and spread it out. Bake in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
- Cool the Cakes: Remove from the oven and allow the cakes to cool in the pans for about 10 minutes before transferring them to a wire rack to cool completely.
- Layer and Serve: Once cooled, place one cake layer on a serving plate, top with a thin layer of pumpkin or yogurt (optional), and add the second cake layer on top. Decorate as desired and serve.

I keep the cake covered in the fridge for up to three days. Luna gets a small slice as a treat, and the cake usually lasts us four days.
