Apple Pear Cake Dogs Will Gobble Up

I made this apple pear cake for my dog Milo’s birthday last fall. The apples and pears made the kitchen smell sweet, and he barked at the oven until it was done.

This Apple Pear Cake for Dogs combines ripe apples and pears into a moist and flavorful cake that’s safe and healthy for your canine companion. The recipe yields a cake suitable for sharing, making it a great treat for doggy birthday parties or playdates.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup finely grated apples (about 1 medium apple)
  • 1 cup finely grated pears (about 1 medium pear)
  • 1/4 cup unsweetened applesauce
  • 1 egg
  • 2 cups whole wheat flour (or gluten-free flour as needed)
  • 1/2 cup rolled oats
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/4 cup honey (optional, for sweetness)
  • 1/4 cup water (adjust as necessary for consistency)

Instructions

  1. Preheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a round cake pan.
  2. Mix Wet Ingredients: In a large bowl, combine the grated apples, grated pears, applesauce, and egg. Mix well until combined.
  3. Combine Dry Ingredients: In another bowl, mix the whole wheat flour, rolled oats, and baking powder. Gradually add the dry mixture to the wet ingredients, stirring until just combined. If the mixture is too thick, add a bit of water until you reach a suitable batter consistency.
  4. Bake the Cake: Pour the batter into the prepared cake pan and smooth it out. Bake in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  5. Cool and Serve: Let the cake cool in the pan for a few minutes before transferring it to a wire rack. Once cooled, you can slice it into serving portions for your dog.
