Duck & Brown Rice Balanced Cat Food Recipe

I cook this duck and brown rice balanced cat recipe when I want a heartier meal for my cat, Luna. The duck fat renders down and coats the rice, and she eats it with a focus she rarely shows for kibble.

This recipe cooks tender duck with brown rice and vegetables, ensuring your cat receives a balanced diet. Prep time is minimal and the recipe yields enough food to keep your cat satisfied while providing the nutrition they need.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups brown rice, rinsed
  • 4 cups water or low-sodium chicken broth
  • 1 pound ground duck or duck meat, boneless and skinless
  • 1/2 cup carrots, finely diced
  • 1/2 cup peas, frozen or fresh
  • 1/4 cup pumpkin puree (not pie filling)
  • 1 tablespoon fish oil or flaxseed oil (optional)
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt (omit if concerned about sodium)

Instructions

  1. Cook the Rice: In a large pot, combine the brown rice and water or broth. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat, cover, and simmer for 45 minutes or until the rice is fully cooked.
  2. Prepare the Duck: In a separate skillet, cook the ground duck over medium heat until browned. Drain excess fat if necessary.
  3. Mix Ingredients: Once the rice is cooked, fluff it with a fork and add the cooked duck, carrots, peas, and pumpkin puree. Mix well to combine all ingredients.
  4. Add Oil: If using, stir in the fish or flaxseed oil for added omega-3 fatty acids. Allow the mixture to cool completely before serving.
  5. Serve: Portion the food into your cat’s dish, refrigerate any leftovers in an airtight container for up to three days.
