Kale & Apple Cake for Nutritious Celebrations

I baked this kale and apple cake for my dog Oliver’s birthday last weekend. The kale wilted into the apple, and he ate the first piece without picking around the greens.

This recipe is a delightful way to incorporate ingredients that are beneficial for dogs while ensuring a tasty treat. Follow this easy homemade dog food recipe to create a special dog cake for your furry friend.

A colorful kale and apple dog cake on a playful plate with dog toys, designed for a pet celebration.

This dog cake recipe combines fresh kale, sweet apples, and wholesome ingredients that promote your dog’s health. It takes about 40 minutes from start to finish and serves as a fantastic treat for special occasions or just because.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup whole wheat flour
  • 1/2 cup rolled oats
  • 1 cup finely chopped kale (stems removed)
  • 1 apple, peeled and grated
  • 1/2 cup unsweetened applesauce
  • 1/4 cup peanut butter (ensure it’s xylitol-free)
  • 1 large egg
  • 1/4 cup honey or maple syrup
  • 1/2 cup water if needed for consistency

Instructions

  1. Preheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and prepare a cake pan by greasing or lining it with parchment paper.
  2. Mix Dry Ingredients: In a large bowl, combine whole wheat flour and rolled oats.
  3. Combine Wet Ingredients: In another bowl, mix together chopped kale, grated apple, applesauce, peanut butter, egg, and honey until well combined.
  4. Combine Mixtures: Gradually add the wet mixture to the dry mixture, stirring until just combined. If the batter is too thick, add water a little at a time until desired consistency is reached.
  5. Bake the Cake: Pour the batter into the prepared cake pan and spread it evenly. Bake for about 25-30 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
  6. Cool and Serve: Allow the cake to cool completely before serving. You can cut it into pieces appropriate for your dog’s size and enjoy celebrating together.
