Mini Layer Cake Perfect for Small Dogs

I made this mini layer cake for my small dog Luna’s birthday last month. The small layers were just her size, and she ate the first piece in two bites.

This simple dog cake recipe is designed with small dogs in mind, ensuring that the portion sizes are just right for their appetite. You can customize it by adding dog-friendly frosting or toppings to make it even more special.

This Mini Layer Cake features moist layers made from wholesome ingredients like whole wheat flour, peanut butter, and applesauce. The recipe takes about 45 minutes to prepare and bake, yielding a delightful cake that your small dog will enjoy.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup whole wheat flour
  • 1/2 cup unsweetened applesauce
  • 1/2 cup natural peanut butter (make sure it’s xylitol-free)
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 egg
  • Optional: Dog-friendly frosting or yogurt for decoration

Instructions

  1. Preheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and lightly grease two 4-inch round cake pans.
  2. Mix Wet Ingredients: In a mixing bowl, combine the peanut butter, applesauce, egg, and water until well blended.
  3. Combine Dry Ingredients: In another bowl, mix the whole wheat flour and baking powder.
  4. Combine All Ingredients: Gradually add the dry mixture to the wet mixture, stirring until a smooth batter forms.
  5. Bake the Cakes: Divide the batter evenly between the two prepared cake pans and spread it out evenly. Bake for 20-25 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  6. Cool the Cakes: Allow the cakes to cool in the pans for a few minutes before transferring them to a wire rack to cool completely.
  7. Assemble the Cake: Once cooled, place one layer on a serving plate. If desired, spread a layer of frosting or yogurt on top before adding the second layer.
  8. Decorate and Serve: Top the second layer with more frosting or yogurt, and embellish with dog-safe toppings. Serve a small slice to your pup to celebrate!
