Birthday Bone Cake Every Dog Will Bark For

I made this birthday bone cake for my dog Luna’s birthday pawty last month. The bone shape made the other dogs bark with excitement, and she ate the first piece before I could take a photo.

A festive bone-shaped dog cake decorated with frosting and carob chips, ready for a dog

This Birthday Bone Cake for Dogs is made with peanut butter, pumpkin, and whole wheat flour, providing a nutritious and delicious way for your pet to celebrate. The recipe serves about 8 dog-sized slices and can be made in under an hour.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups whole wheat flour
  • 1 cup canned pumpkin (not pumpkin pie filling)
  • 1/2 cup peanut butter (unsweetened and unsalted)
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 cup low-sodium chicken broth or water
  • Optional: Carob chips or dog-friendly frosting for decoration

Instructions

  1. Preheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a bone-shaped cake pan or a regular round cake pan.
  2. Mix Ingredients: In a large bowl, combine the whole wheat flour and baking powder. In another bowl, mix together the pumpkin, peanut butter, eggs, and chicken broth until smooth.
  3. Combine Mixtures: Gradually add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients, mixing well until you have a thick batter.
  4. Bake the Cake: Pour the batter into the prepared cake pan. Bake for 30-35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
  5. Cool and Decorate: Allow the cake to cool completely before removing it from the pan. Optionally, decorate with dog-friendly frosting or sprinkle with carob chips before serving.
  6. Serve: Slice the cake into dog-sized pieces and serve to your furry friend. Make sure to store leftovers in an airtight container.
