Ingredients

  • 1 cup whole wheat flour
  • 1/2 cup unsweetened pumpkin puree
  • 1/4 cup peanut butter (make sure it’s xylitol-free)
  • 1/4 cup vegetable oil or unsweetened applesauce
  • 1 large egg
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/4 cup water (if needed for consistency)
  • 1/4 cup unsweetened yogurt (for frosting, optional)
  • 2 tablespoons peanut butter (for frosting, optional)
  • Carob chips or dog-safe treats for decoration (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a cake pan suitable for your dog’s size.
  2. Mix Wet Ingredients: In a mixing bowl, combine the pumpkin puree, peanut butter, oil (or applesauce), and egg until smooth.
  3. Combine Dry Ingredients: In another bowl, whisk together the whole wheat flour, baking soda, and baking powder.
  4. Combine Mixtures: Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture, stirring until fully incorporated. If the batter is too thick, add a little water to reach desired consistency.
  5. Bake the Cake: Pour the batter into the prepared cake pan. Bake for 25-30 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean. Allow the cake to cool completely before frosting.
  6. Prepare Frosting: In a separate bowl, mix yogurt and peanut butter until smooth. Spread the frosting over the cooled cake.
  7. Decorate: If desired, sprinkle carob chips or dog-safe treats on top for decoration before serving.
