Naked Birthday Cake With Rustic Homemade Charm

I made this naked birthday cake for my dog Milo’s birthday last month. The unfrosted sides showed the layers, and he ate the first piece without hesitation.

Simple Naked Birthday Cake for Dogs

A delightful Naked Birthday Cake for dogs, topped with fruits, on a decorative plate with a happy dog nearby.

This Naked Birthday Cake is light, fluffy, and guaranteed to make your pup wag their tail in delight. Made without frosting, it features layers of moist cake and can be topped with fresh fruits or a dollop of peanut butter for an extra special touch. The recipe serves 8 dog-friendly slices and takes about 45 minutes to prepare and bake.

Ingredients

  • 1 ½ cups whole wheat flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • ½ teaspoon baking soda
  • ½ cup unsweetened applesauce
  • ½ cup natural peanut butter (ensure it doesn’t contain xylitol)
  • 1 large egg
  • ½ cup low-fat yogurt or cream cheese (for topping)
  • Fresh fruits (like banana slices or blueberries) for decoration

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and lightly grease two 6-inch round cake pans.
  2. Mix Dry Ingredients: In a bowl, whisk together the whole wheat flour, baking powder, and baking soda.
  3. Combine Wet Ingredients: In a separate bowl, mix the applesauce, peanut butter, and egg together until well combined.
  4. Combine Mixtures: Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, mixing until just combined.
  5. Bake: Divide the batter evenly between the prepared cake pans and bake for about 25-30 minutes, or until a toothpick comes out clean.
  6. Cool: Allow the cakes to cool in the pans for 10 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.
  7. Assemble the Cake: Once cooled, place one layer on a serving plate, spread yogurt or cream cheese on top, then add the second layer. Top with additional yogurt and decorate with fresh fruits as desired.
  8. Serve: Cut into slices and serve your furry friend a special piece while sharing the rest with family and friends!
