Bacon Sweet Potato Cake Made for Happy Dogs

I baked this bacon sweet potato cake for my dog Luna’s birthday last weekend. The bacon and sweet potato made the cake savory-sweet, and she ate the first piece without hesitation.

A homemade Bacon Sweet Potato Cake for dogs, topped with bacon and parsley, with a dog eagerly watching in the background.

This dog-friendly cake combines the savory flavor of bacon with the natural sweetness of sweet potatoes, offering a nutritious twist that your pup will love. The recipe takes about 1 hour to prepare and bake and yields a generous cake to share.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup mashed sweet potatoes, cooked and cooled
  • 1/2 cup cooked crumbled bacon (reserve some for topping)
  • 1/4 cup unsweetened applesauce
  • 1/4 cup peanut butter (make sure it’s xylitol-free)
  • 1 cup whole wheat flour (or gluten-free flour if needed)
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/4 cup low-sodium chicken broth (or water)
  • 2 large eggs
  • Optional: chopped parsley for garnish

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease an 8-inch round cake pan with non-stick spray or line it with parchment paper.
  2. In a large bowl, combine the mashed sweet potatoes, cooked bacon, applesauce, and peanut butter. Mix until well combined.
  3. In another bowl, whisk together the flour and baking powder. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the sweet potato mixture, alternating with chicken broth and eggs. Mix until just combined.
  4. Pour the batter into the prepared cake pan and smooth the top. Bake in the preheated oven for 30-35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
  5. Let the cake cool in the pan for 10 minutes before transferring it to a wire rack to cool completely.
  6. Once cooled, top the cake with reserved crumbled bacon and optional chopped parsley for garnish. Slice and serve to your happy dog!

I store the cake in an airtight container in the fridge for up to two days since bacon spoils quickly. Luna gets a small slice as a treat, and the cake usually lasts us two days.
